The United States won three of the six Greco-Roman gold medals contested on the opening night of the Pan American Wrestling Championships in Canadian capital Ottawa.

Max Nowry, Raymond Bunker and G'Angelo Hancock ended the night top of the podium after respective wins in the 55 kilograms, 72kg and 97kg classes.

Nowry used three big moves to defeat home wrestler Kieran Akhtar 10-0 in just 1min 13sec and earn a second consecutive Pan American title.

Brazil’s Sargis Khachatryan picked up the 55kg bronze.

Bunker, facing Brazil’s Joilson De Brito Ramos Junior in the only match contested at 72kg, trailed 2-0 at the break but came back to win 3-2.

In 97kg final, Hancock avenged a loss from earlier in the day against defending champion Gabriel Rosillo Kindelan of Cuba, winning 10-0 with the help of two big throws.

Bronze went to Luillys Jose Perez Mora of Venezuela on an injury default over Kevin Mejia Castillo of Honduras.

Cuba picked up two gold medals, and there was no more dominant figure on the opening day than their Rio 2016 and two-time world champion Ismael Borrero Molina, who outscored his opponents 37-2 en route to the 67kg title.

In the final, he cruised past Diego Martinez de Leija of Mexico 11-2 after the latter had scored first with a takedown on the edge.

It was Molina’s sixth Pan American title win.

Bronze medals went to Alejandro Sancho of the United States, who beat Colombia’s Julian Horta Acevedo 10-0, and Cristhian Rivas Castro of Ecuador, who defeated Cristobal Alonso Torres Nunez of Chile 7-2.

Cuba’s second gold came in the 130kg category, where Angel Pacheco Romero dominated the 2018 world silver medallist Adam Coon of the United States in the final, winning 8-0.

Bronze medals went to Moises Perez Hellburg of Venezuela, who beat Yasmani Acosta Fernandez of Chile on an injury default, and Leo Santana Heredia of the Dominican Republic, who defeated Luciano Del Rio of Argentina 3-0.

The final gold medal on the first of four days of competition went to Colombia’s Ditcher Toro Castaneda, who beat Leslie Fuenffinger of the United States 9-0 in the 60 kg final.

Toro thus added a first Pan American senior title to his two junior versions.

Emerson Felipe Ordonez of Guatemala, who earned bronze with a 4-3 win over Brazil’s Marat Garipov, was funded by the United World Wrestling Development Technical Assistance programme, which allows athletes from developing countries the opportunities to compete at top-level events.

The other 60kg bronze went to the Dominican Republic’s Jancel Pimentel Gonzalez, who beat Miguel Ugalde Aguilar of Mexico 8-0.
