Coronavirus cases associated with the UAE Tour has reportedly increased to 12, with the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Health and Prevention having confirmed six new cases.

The Ministry confirmed six individuals diagnosed included two Russians, two Italians, one German and one Colombian.

"The patients were connected to the two previously announced cases associated with the cycling event, the UAE Tour," a UAE Tour statement read.

"MoHAP confirmed that the cases are being monitored, and individuals are currently in a stable condition and are receiving all necessary health care required."

The UAE Tour was cancelled with two stages remaining late on February 27, after two staff members of one of the teams tested positive for the virus, named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization.

Teams were quarantined at the race to undergo testing, with several riders and officials having since been allowed to leave the country after negative tests for the coronavirus.

Both the Cofidis and Groupama-FDJ teams have confirmed they were told to remain in quarantine until March 14.

Gazprom-RusVelo and UAE Team Emirates have also remained as a precaution.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, four riders are among the six new coronavirus cases reported.

Sprinter Fernando Gaviria is reportedly among the cases, as the only Colombian rider still in the UAE.

Astana’s Hernando Bohórquez, the only other Colombian rider at the race, has already left the country.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention have said all individuals within the two quarantined hotels that had no direct contact with athletes and their administrative teams were examined, and that those that tested negative for the coronavirus were allowed to leave the hotel premises.

"Individuals currently quarantined will be "re-examined and tested for the virus to ensure their utmost safety," the Ministry said.

"Disinfection and sterilisation procedures will be carried out for all buildings, utilities and vehicles."

A total of 27 cases have been reported in the UAE.

There have now been more than 93,000 cases of coronavirus since the outbreak originated in Chinese city Wuhan, and numerous sporting events have either been postponed or cancelled.

More than 3,200 people have died and more than 80 countries and territories are affected, but the overwhelming majority of cases are in China.

More than 51,000 people have reportedly recovered from the coronavirus to date.

Italy has had the largest number of cases in Europe, with over 2,500 cases having been confirmed to date.

The outbreak in Italy has reportedly placed the Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo races at risk of postponement.

Race director Mauro Vegni told Italian website Tuttobiciweb he hoped the races would take place as planned.

Vegni admitted, however, with the Italian Government poised to introduce new restrictions on sporting events, the events may be pushed back until later this year.
