World Taekwondo are in close contact with officials in Italy regarding the future of the European Qualification Tournament for Tokyo 2020 in Milan.

Competition is due to take place between April 17 and 19 at Allianz Cloud Milano but Italy has witnessed an alarming spike in coronavirus cases.

A number of airlines have opted to cancel flights to Milan, which will host the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics alongside Cortina D'Ampezzo.

The Asian qualifier has already been moved to Jordan's capital Amman by World Taekwondo, from its original host city of Wuxi in China.

A decision on the European event is now due to be made on Friday (March 6).

"World Taekwondo Europe (WTE) has received many questions about the European Qualification Tournament in Milan," a WTE statement said.

"Please be informed that World Taekwondo Europe, the Italian Taekwondo Federation and World Taekwondo are in close contact with each other with regard to the developments of the outbreak of the Corona COVID-19 virus in Italy.

"Various alternative scenarios are being considered in order to guarantee maximum safety for all participants at the European Qualification Tournament.

"World Taekwondo Europe will publish its decision on the date and location of the European Qualification Tournament on Friday, March 6, 2020."

Coronavirus has forced the cancellation or postponement of numerous sporting events since the outbreak originated in China.

Only China and South Korea have recorded more patients than Italy, where there have been more than 2,500 cases.

Nearly 80 people have died in the European country.
