International Luge Federation President Josef Fendt opened a new museum at the world governing body's headquarters in Berchtesgaden ©FIL

A new museum has been opened at the offices of the International Luge Federation (FIL) in Berchtesgaden.

The exhibition is titled "The Olympic History of Luge", and delegates of National Federations taking part in the season’s finale of the FIL World Cup in Königssee last weekend were invited to attend. 

FIL President Josef Fendt welcomed Franz Rasp, the Mayor of Berchtesgaden, and luge legends including Germany's Sepp Lenz, the 1962 world champion, three-time Olympic gold medallist Georg Hackl and Hans Plenk, the 1964 Olympic bronze medallist.

Luge made its debut on the Winter Olympic programme at Innsbruck in 1964 and has appeared in every Games since.

The exhibition was curated by Herbert Wurzer, the archivist of the FIL, and demonstrates the development of sledges during various Olympic periods, 

Gold medals from various Winter Games and photographs of the sport's Olympic champions are also among the exhibits. 

The display also includes a number of original Olympic Games Torches and a collection of stamps featuring luge. 

The exhibition can be visited during normal office hours upon prior registration.
