The national governing body had been due to attend a training camp, which would have featured both the Austrian and Hungarian national teams.

Water Polo Canada executive director Martin Goulet told the Canadian Press news agency the decision to cancel the trip was made after talks with the Montreal Institute of Sport.

"We feel we are under control, we're monitoring things closely," Goulet said.

"We'll see what happens.

“That's the reality of preparing for big events.

“We'll have to be prepared to make some adjustments, have 'B' plans and all these kinds of things.

"What we were afraid of is that we would end up with people put in quarantine and that would screw up our preparation for the Olympics with players getting stuck with these kinds of things."

Canada’s women’s team have already qualified for Tokyo 2020, following their second-place finish at last year’s Pan American Games in Lima.

Canada’s men’s team will participate in an Olympic qualification tournament in Rotterdam from March 22 to 29.

The 12-team event will determine the three final qualifiers for the Olympic Games.

Two cases of coronavirus have been reported in the Netherlands.

Water polo qualification has already been impacted by the outbreak, with the Asian qualification event cancelled.

Results from the 2018 Asian Games were used to determine the qualifiers, with China’s women’s team and Kazakhstan’s men’s squad advancing to Tokyo 2020.
