Five Italian fencers secured top-three finishes at a trio of International Fencing Federation (FIE) World Cup events.

Elisa Di Francisca was the standout performer, winning the women's foil competition in Kazan in Russia.

The London 2012 Olympic champion defeated She Yue of China 9-8 in a close final.

Di Francisca met compatriot Alice Volpi in the semi-finals, winning 15-7, while Russia's Adelina Zagidullina won the other bronze medal.

Di Francisca is now up to third in the women's foil rankings, with Volpi 3,000 points ahead in second on a score of 200,000.

Top of the pile is Russian Inna Derigglazova on 309,000.

The men's foil event in Egyptian capital Cairo also witnessed an all-Italian semi-final, with Andrea Cassara overcoming Alessio Foconi 15-11. 

Cassara lost to Spain's Carlos Llavador in the final, while American Alexander Massialas shared third place with Foconi.

Foconi, who has topped the men's foil rankings in each of the last two seasons, remains in that position.

Meanwhile in Warsaw, the men's sabre competition was won by Aron Szilagyi of Hungary, who defeated the United States' Eli Dershwitz

Oh Sang-uk of South Korea and Italy's Luca Curatoli shared third place.

The South Korean leads the men's sabre rankings, with Curatoli third.

Tomorrow will see team events contested in Poland, Egypt and Russia.
