Top seeds Tomokazu Harimoto and Mima Ito continued their serene progress at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hungarian Open, recording straight games victories to reach the quarter-finals in Budapest.

Harimoto, seeded first in the men's singles, swept aside India's Sathiyan Gnanasekaran 11-8, 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 at Budapest Olympic Hall.

The 16-year-old rising star, winner of the World Tour Grand Finals in 2018, will face Germany's Benedikt Duda in the last eight of this ITTF World Tour event. 

Duda, who came through qualifying with a perfect record, progressed to the quarter-finals with an 11-8, 11-1, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7 victory over Greece's Panagiotis Gionis.

Japan's Jin Takuya was unable to build on his impressive win against fourth seed Patrick Franziska of Germany as he fell to a 4-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 defeat to compatriot Yukiya Uda.

Ito earned her second consecutive 4-0 win in the women's singles as she despatched Margaryta Pesotska of Ukraine 11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5.

The Japanese player's reward is a quarter-final meeting with team-mate Hitomi Sato, who defeated compatriot Miyu Kato 12-10, 3-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8.

Second seed Kasumi Ishikawa of Japan is also through after she overcame Puerto Rico's Adriana Diaz 11-5, 11-9, 14-12, 7-11, 12-10.

Ishikawa's opponent in the last eight is set to be Nina Mittelham of Germany, who beat Britt Eerland of the Netherlands 3-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8.

The tournament is due to continue tomorrow.
