Vlhová had been denied giant slalom success yesterday in Slovenia, after being leapfrogged by New Zealand’s Alice Robinson in the second run of the event.

Attention was focused on Vlhová in the absence of American star Mikaela Shiffrin, with the two skiers having won the last 25 slalom races between them.

Sweden’s Swenn-Larsson threatened to break the stranglehold after topping the standings at the end of the first run by finishing in 53.89 seconds.

She enjoyed a cushion of 0.50 over second-placed Nina Haver-Løseth of Norway, with Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener a further 0.05 back in third.

Vlhová finished the first run outside the podium places after placing fourth with a time of 54.81.

The Slovakian skier produced a fine second run of the competition to end in 52.75, giving her a combined time of 1:47.56.

She appeared destined to finish in second place to Swenn-Larsson, however the Swedish skier crashed in the final metres to hand victory to Vlhová.

Holdener finished in second place in a time of 1:47.80, with Austria’s Katharina Truppe completing the podium in 1:48.45.

The result saw Vlhová move to the top of the women’s slalom World Cup standings on 460 points, with Shiffrin dropping to second on 440.

The women’s World Cup season will continue at Crans-Montana in Switzerland on February 20.

Downhill, alpine combined and super-G events will be contested at the three-day competition.
