France’s Marc-Antoine Olivier and Germany’s Leonie Beck celebrated victories in the opening event of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Marathon Swim World Series in Doha.

World Championship silver medallist Olivier produced an impressive display in the Qatari capital to top the men’s 10-kilometre podium.

Olivier was able to pull clear of the men’s field during the competition to secure a dominant win, with the 23-year-old finishing in a time of 1 hour, 49min and 46.6sec.

It marked the perfect start to the season for the Frenchman, who will aim to improve on his Rio 2016 bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Germany’s Rob Muffels and Florian Wellbrock were the closest challengers to Olivier.

Muffels won the silver medal after ending 12.6 seconds behind the winner, with world champion Wellbrock just 0.01 further back in third.

Hungary’s Kristof Rasovszky, the men’s athlete of the year for 2019 in the discipline, endured a difficult opening event to the season.

Rasovszky ultimately finished in 64th place.

The women’s competition saw Beck triumph from a group of favourites in a closely contested race.

The German swimmer earned a narrow victory in a time of 1:56:41.1.

Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha, who won last year’s event and the ANOC World Beach Games title in Doha last year, finished as the runner-up.

The women’s open water athlete of the year finished 0.2 seconds behind Beck.

She touched the finish marker ahead of bronze medallist Sharon van Rouwendaal of The Netherlands.

The Olympic champion was awarded the same time as Cunha, but was forced to settle for bronze.

Italy’s Arianna Bridi began her defence of the Marathon Swim World Series title by ending fourth, 1.3 seconds behind the winner.

The Seychelles will host the second event of the World Series in May.
