Tokyo 2020 are set to host a departure ceremony next week with Olympic mascot Miraitowa and Paralympic mascot Someity in advance of their tour to promote the "Make the Beat!" cheering project.

The mascots are due to visit past and future Olympic and Paralympic host cities in six countries to spread awareness of "Make the Beat!", which was launched in September 2019, and raise excitement and enthusiasm for Tokyo 2020.

A full list of tour destinations will be revealed at the departure ceremony, due to take place at Edo Butai, on the fourth floor of the Haneda Airport International Terminal, on Wednesday (February 19).

"Make the Beat!" aims to engage fans all over the world via social media and encourage them to become familiar with the new "Tokyo 2020 beat", described as being a rhythm that spectators can dance or clap along to in order to heighten atmosphere and excitement at venues.

"During the Tokyo 2020 Games, regardless of their country of origin, fans from all over the world will be able to feel a sense of unity by clapping or dancing in time to the Tokyo 2020 beat," a statement from the Organising Committee reads.

In the lead-up to Tokyo 2020, fans can upload videos of themselves performing the "beat" to social media with the hashtag #2020beat.

Selected videos will be screened at competition venues during Games-time.

The departure ceremony will include an explanation of "Make the Beat!" and the overseas tour.

There will also be Tokyo 2020 beat performances by Tsugaru-shamisen artist TENBI as well as Miraitowa and Someity.

Furthermore, video messages from "Make the Beat!" supporters, including the Backstreet Boys, will be screened.
