Crowds in Sigulda will witness International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup and European Championship titles earned, as well as the awarding of Olympic medals.

Competition at the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track in the Latvian town is due to take place over the next three days, as the ISBF World Cup season draws to a close.

Action is set to begin tomorrow with the two-woman bobsleigh event, which will take place without World Cup leader Kaillie Humphries.

Humphries, who switched nationality from Canada to the United States prior to the season, has opted out of the event to prepare for the World Championships.

Her absence looks set to create a three-way battle between Germany’s Stephanie Schneider and Mariama Jamanka, and Canada’s Christine De Bruin for the World Cup title.

Schneider and defending champion Jamanka will also be among the favourites to win the European title, which will be decided at the conclusion of the two runs of competition.

Attention will turn to the men’s skeleton competition early on Saturday (February 15), with home favourite Martins Dukurs aiming to defend his European title.

Dukurs also leads the World Cup standings by 21 points from Russia’s Alexander Tretiakov, following the double Olympic silver medallist winning the last competition in St Moritz.

Latvian success will be celebrated regardless at the event, with upgraded Olympic medals from Sochi 2014 set to be awarded.

Oskars Melbārdis, Arvis Vilkaste, Daumants Dreiškens and Jānis Strenga will receive Latvia's first Winter Olympic Games gold medal.

The quartet were upgraded from silver after the disqualification of Alexander Zubkov, who led the Russian quartet which claimed gold.

Zubkov was also stripped of the two-man bobsleigh title for his role in the state-sponsored doping scandal.

Melbārdis and Dreiškens will receive bronze in the two-man event, after being upgraded from their original fifth place finish due to disqualification of Zubkov and the second Russian crew.

Two-man bobsleigh competition will round off the second day of the World Cup in Sigulda, with the first of back-to-back races taking place.

The second race are set to take place on Sunday (February 16), which will determine both the World Cup and European titles.

Germany’s Francesco Friedrich looks set to add the two-man World Cup title to the four-man crown.

Women’s skeleton competition will be held on the final day of action, with Germany’s Jacqueline Lölling currently top of the World Cup standings on 1,472 points.

Her compatriot Tina Hermann and defending European champion Janine Flock of Austria complete the current top three on 1,419 and 1,414 respectively.
