Germany won both the men's and women's tournaments at the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) Europe Top 16 Cup final in Montreux in Switzerland after two underdog finalists' stories concluded in silver.

Women's defending champion Petrissa Solja won the women’s European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) Europe Top 16 Cup final in Montreux in Switzerland after putting an end to a great run for The Netherlands’ Britt Eerland.

Eerland shocked the number one seed, Sofia Polcanova with a 4-1 win over the Austrian in the semis to make her first European final.

She met Solja in the final who also won by the same score over Margaryta Pesotska of Ukraine who could not upset a second German in a row after knocking out Han Ying in the last round.

In the final, it looked as though Eerland was on course for victory when she went up two sets to nil, but the second seed put a stop to the world number 47, winning the rest of the sets to give a final score of 4-2.

In the bronze medal match Pesotska went two sets up against Polcanova before the European number one came back to win the match 4-2.

In the men’s final, Germany’s third seed Timo Boll ended the fantastic run of Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic in a straightforward 4-1 win, claiming a joint-record seventh title after winning his first in 2002.

Boll had previously ended the run of Austria’s Robert Gardos who knocked out European number one Mattias Falck in the quarter-finals.

He set up the match with Jorgic after the Slovenian defeated Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar 4-1 in the other match, making his first European final.

In the bronze medal match, Gardos won 4-3 in seven sets against Pucar.
