Olympic wrestling bronze medallist Jenny Fransson has been removed from the Swedish team for Tokyo 2020 following confirmation of her positive drug test.

The Swedish Wrestling Association confirmed Fransson had been provisionally suspended earlier this week.

A sample from Fransson, taken on January 9, reportedly contained traces of the anabolic steroid methyltestosterone.

Analysis of the B-sample was then conducted, with the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) confirming the presence of the substance.

The organisation said Fransson has now been removed from their Olympic squad and the SOK’s support programme Top and Talent.

“All types of doping offences are unacceptable, it is always the asset's full responsibility not to break any doping rule,” said Peter Reinebo, SOK operations manager.

“Regardless of whether an active person intentionally or through negligence has received a prohibited substance, it is a very serious offence and highly culpable.

“If a doping offence is confirmed, an active person cannot remain in the Top and Talent programme according to SOK's policy.”

Fransson had reportedly claimed the substance was ingested by mistake, but now faces a ban from the sport.

The 32-year-old will miss out on a fourth consecutive appearance at the Olympic Games.

She secured a bronze medal at Rio 2016, after coming through the repechage.

Fransson is currently ranked second in the world rankings for the women’s under-68 kilogram category and won a silver medal at last year’s World Championships.

The Swedish wrestler earned the 72kg world title in 2012, while she was also crowned 2018 European champion and won bronze in both 2008 and 2019.
