Egypt’s three-times Paralympic gold medallist Sherif Osman claimed another win tonight as he lifted 197kg to win the men’s 59kg class at the Abuja International Conference Centre.

Osman is now targeting breaking his own world record at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Silver went to home lifter Thomas Kure, who managed 87kg, while an effort of 131kg was enough to take bronze for Bakary Diallo of Senegal.

Home celebrations got fully underway in the men’s 65kg class, where gold and silver went respectively to Nigeria’s Rio 2016 gold medallist Paul Kehinde, who lifted 194kg, and Mufutau Rasaq, who managed 182kg.

Bronze went to the Ivory Coast’s Ano Adou with 165kg.

The happy mood for the hosts was maintained as Nigeria’s Nnamadi Innocent won the men’s 72kg class with a lift of 198kg, with Egyptian lifters Mahmoud Attia and Metwaly Mathna taking silver and bronze respectively with 193kg and 190kg.

In the last men’s event of the evening, the 80kg class, gold went to Egypt’s Mohamed Elelfat, with silver going to Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Obichukwu and bronze to Brazil’s Ailton Bento de Souza.

The evening concluded with the women’s finals in the 73kg and 79kg category.

Gold in the 73kg category went to Nigeria’s Paulina Okpala with 132kg, as silver went to Egypt’s Amal Mahmoud, who lifted 125kg, and bronze to Mariana D’Andrea of Brazil, who managed 124kg.

In the 79kg category gold went to home lifter Eniola Falodun with 115kg, ahead of Kenya’s Joyce Njuguna on 95kg and Moldova’s Larisa Marinenkova on 85kg.
