Australia made a blistering start to the Sydney stage of the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series, running in 11 tries as they won both games on the opening day.

Ellia Green scored a hat-trick in a 33-0 victory over Spain to begin the hosts’ day and Charlotte Caslick later scored another hat-rick in a 34-0 win over Ireland as the Australian defence remained unbroken after two matches.

Each try scored by Australia will see AUD$1,500 (£764/$1,000/€908) donated to the Red Cross appeal to support the bushfires relief effort, meaning AUD$16,500 (£8,404/$11,000/€9,988) has been raised thus far.

The biggest shock of the opening day was produced by Fiji, who beat the United States 19-14 thanks to Mereseini Leivere’s decisive try late on.

The Americans responded by scoring six tries in a 34-19 win over Brazil, while Fiji lost out to Canada in their second game.

Canada also beat Brazil to end the first day atop Group B and are one of five teams unbeaten after two games, alongside Australia, France, New Zealand and England.

France scored 12 tries in beating Ireland and Spain and are second in Pool C, behind the Australians only on points difference.

In Pool A, Japan reached halftime against New Zealand with the score still 0-0 but couldn’t keep it that way, with the Black Ferns ultimately running out 28-0 winners.

New Zealand then made it 16 games unbeaten when the edged out Russia, but it may have come at a cost as Tyla Nathan-Wong left the field with an apparent injury.
