The draw for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games wheelchair basketball competition is to be held on March 22.

Hosted by the Japan Wheelchair Basketball Federation in Tokyo, the draw will also be streamed online.

The men’s competition will feature 12 teams and the women’s 10, with only one qualification spot still up for grabs in each.

Those will be filled when the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) 2020 Afro Paralympic Qualifiers are held in Johannesburg between March 1 and 6 as Africa is the only region yet to have any teams confirm their place at the Games.

Teams will be paired up and then drawn into opposing pools to ensure that there is an even distribution of sides from the various continents, with both the men’s and women’s events featuring just two groups.

As hosts, Japan will have the advantage of being able to choose which group they wish to be in.

The United States were the dominant force in wheelchair basketball at Rio 2016, winning men’s and women’s gold as one nation claimed both titles for the first time since Canada did so at Sydney 2000.

Germany won women’s silver, with Spain taking home the men’s equivalent.

Britain won men’s bronze and The Netherlands were victorious in the women’s third-place playoff.

The Americans will be back to defend both titles later this year; Canada, Spain, Britain, Germany, Australia and the hosts are the only other countries that have qualified for both the men’s and women’s competitions.
