South Korea struck late to win the tournament ©AFC

South Korea won the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship for the first time as an extra-time strike downed Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the final.

Jeong Tae-wook headed home the only goal in the 113th minute of the game at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium, with the event in Thailand coming to a dramatic conclusion.

Neither side had won the age-group event before so new winners were guaranteed before the start of the game.

The Koreans had the best chances within the 90 minutes, with Jeong Woo-yeong's 20th-minute effort well saved by Mohammed Al Yami.

Kim Jin-gyu then narrowly fired past the post before Jeong Woo-yeong spurned a superb chance by blasting over the bar when well placed.

Abdulrahman Ghareeb's late drive was the closest the Saudis came before they suffered heartbreak in extra time.

Lee Dong-gyeong floated over a promising free-kick which Jeong Tae-wook connected with to settle the final.

It continued a theme of late goals for South Korea in Thailand after they won their quarter-final with Jordan thanks to a 95th-minute strike.

They also scored in the 93rd minute to beat China in the group stage.

South Korea are the fourth winners of the event following Iraq, Japan and Uzbekistan.

Both finalists have also qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, alongside third-placed Australia.
