Norway's Olympic ski jump champion Maren Lundby got her season off to an ideal start on her home ground of Lillehammer today, winning the opening competition in the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup.

The home crowd were expectant of success from Lundby given that she topped yesterday's qualifying, and they were not disappointed,

The 25-year-old, who has won the last two overall Ski Jumping World Cup titles, produced efforts of 138.0 and 135.0 metres at the Lysgårdsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena, constructed for the Winter Olympics in 1994.

That gave her a winning overall points total of 280.8.

Two Austrians filled the other podium places - Eva Pinkelnig, who totalled 256.4, and Chira Hoelzl, who scored 255.3.

Lundy's perennial rival, Katharina Althaus of Germany, the Pyeongchang 2018 silver medallist, finished sixth on 247.4.

Japan's Sara Takanashi, the 2013 world champion and 2018 Olympic bronze medallist, finished ninth on 237.7.

Competition continues tomorrow.
