Fanny Smith of Switzerland topped qualifying at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Cross World Cup season opener in the French resort of Val Thorens. 

The 26-year-old defending champion continued her superb form from last season, completing the course in 1min 10.28secs, the fastest time recorded in the qualification round.

In second was Brittany Phelan of Canada in 1:10.47, while Sandra Näslund of Sweden finished third in 1:10.75.

Kevin Drury of Canada was the top qualifier in the men's event, crossing the line in 1:06.61.

Behind him were the French duo of Francois Place and Bastien Midol, with times of 1:06.72 and 1:06.94, respectively. 

Midol was the men's World Cup winner last season.

Competition continues tomorrow, with the podium decided on Sunday (December 8).
