South America's best against the African champions was always going to be a tight affair at Estádio Kléber Andrade, Cariacica.

Cameroon had already suffered a shock defeat to Tajikistan and were in must-win territory. 

They had the perfect start when Francois Bere headed home on 10 minutes and took that lead into halftime.

However, second-half goals from Alexis Flores, Juan Pablo Krilanovich and Matías Godoy gave Argentina the three points. 

In the group's other match, Spain were way too strong for Tajikistan, running out 5-1 winners.

Qualification for the last 16 now comes down to Sunday's (November 3) concluding matches, as Cameroon face Spain and Argentina play Tajikistan.

There is still plenty to be decided in Group F, following a dramatic clash between Mexico and Italy.

Goalless at Estádio Bezerrão, Gama, with just 16 minutes left, Italy's Degnand Gnonto notched his third goal of the competition.

That looked enough going into injury time, until Efraín Álvarez sparked wild Mexican celebrations with the equaliser.

However, there was another twist in the tale, as Italy's Iyenoma Udogie struck with virtually the last kick of the game to send Italy through to the knockout stages with a 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, the whipping boys of the group, the Solomon Islands, lost 7-0 to Paraguay.

A draw between Italy and Paraguay in their final group game will see both teams qualify, while Mexico will look to rack up the goals against the Solomon Islands.
