Defending champion Kento Momota of Japan beat India's Bhamidipati Sai Praneeth in straight games today to book his place in the quarter-finals of the men's singles event at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Denmark Open in Odense.

The world number one and top seed produced a blistering display to triumph 21-6, 21-14 at Odense Sports Park in this BWF Super 750 tournament.

Awaiting Momota in the last eight is home player Rasmus Gemke, who upset the odds to defeat sixth-seeded Indonesian Jonatan Christie 21-17, 23-21.

Also though to the quarter-finals is second seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei after he overcame Indonesia's Shesar Hiren Rhustavito 21-17, 21-14.

Standing between him and a place in the last four is fifth-seeded Chinese Chen Long, who claimed a 21-12, 21-10 win over India's Sameer Verma.

There will also be an all-Danish last-eight clash between fourth seed Anders Antonsen and seventh seed Viktor Axelsen.

Both saw off Thai opposition, with Antonsen beating Khosit Phetpradab 21-13, 21-15 and Antonsen defeating Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-17, 21-12.

The other quarter-final tie pits Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin against Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto.

Thammasin overcame The Netherlands' Mark Caljouw 21-11, 18-21, 21-9, while Sugiarto downed France's Brice Leverdez 21-19, 21-12.

In the last 16 of the women's singles event, world champion PV Sindhu of India was knocked out by 17-year-old South Korean An Se Young after falling to a 14-21, 17-21 loss.

An will go onto face Spain's three-time world champion and reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marín, a 22-20, 29-27 victor at the expense of Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi.

Second seed Chen Yu Fei of China, third seed Nozomi Okuhara of Japan and fourth seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei are also through to the quarter-finals.

Chen beat fellow Chinese Cai Yan Yan 21-14, 21-10, while Okuhara, the 2017 world champion, defeated China's Han Yue 21-10, 21-10 and Tai, the defending champion, overcame Canada's Michelle Li 21-17, 21-17.

Next up for Chen is set to be Japan's Sayaka Takahashi, who beat South Korea's Kim Ga Eun 21-16, 21-14.

Okuhara goes onto meet the United States' Zhang Beiwen, who was leading 14-21, 21-17, 13-9 when her South Korean opponent Sung Ji Hyun retired, and Tai will do battle with Japan's Aya Ohori, a 21-19, 12-21, 21-15 winner over sixth seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.

Competition is due to continue until Sunday (October 20).
