Ghana are set to make their debut at tomorrow's Rugby Africa Women's Sevens Championships, which doubles up as a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Hosted in the Tunisian city of Monastir, debutantes Ghana appear in Pool A alongside top-ranked Kenya, Senegal and Botswana.

Pool B comprises Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa, while Tunisia, Madagascar, Morocco and Mauritius make up Pool C.

Despite being ranked 12th out of 12 teams, Ghana Rugby President Herbert Mensah has claimed there is still value in the tournament.

"We are not expecting to win the tournament but that is not what it is all about," he said.

"It is about putting together a squad for the very first time that can develop and that can in the very near future become a serious contender for the top spot."

The victor will qualify directly for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with the second- and third-placed teams progressing to a global repechage tournament in June.

South Africa are unable to book an Olympic place, however, with South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee rules preventing the team from qualifying from an African regional competition.

Competition in the pool stages begins tomorrow at Mustapha Ben Jannet Stadium, with the quarter-finals, semis and gold-medal match on Sunday (October 13).

"We are very pleased and express our gratitude to the Tunisia Rugby Federation (FTR) to host the Africa Women's Sevens 2019 edition," said Rugby Africa President Khaled Babbou.

"FTR has undertaken all necessary steps to provide very good conditions for this competition and to deliver an excellent image of African women's rugby.

"Africa aims for high level and international recognition, and I believe especially women’s sevens rugby has a great potential to promote and reveal our talents in Africa and to get more players on the continent into rugby.

"I am convinced the women's games will capture the public imagination and I wish all teams good luck in this qualifier event."
