The University of Cape Town were represented by their rugby team, named the Ikey Tigers.

The team had won the first edition of the invitation-only event back in 2015, with competition arranged to coincide with the Rugby World Cup.

University of Cape Town opened their campaign with a comfortable 40-0 victory over the University of British Columbia.

A comfortable 33-7 win over a combined New Zealand Universities team followed, before a 15-0 semi-final success against Oxford University.

It set up a final against Bordeaux University, with the French team having won 13-8 against the University of British Columbia.

They would have no answer to the South Africans in the final, as they clinched a comfortable 52-0 win.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," flanker Nama Xaba told Sport24 following the team's victory.

"To travel to another country, experience a different culture, play against some of the top university rugby clubs in the world, and watch your heroes play in the Rugby World Cup.

"It just doesn’t get better that this."

Three former players for the University of Cape Town are currently in South Africa's squad at the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth and Damian de Allende all featured in their opening match of the tournament against New Zealand.
