The Team Jumbo–Visma rider justified his status as the favourite for victory with a commanding performance on the 36.2 kilometre stage from Jurançon to Pau.

Roglič took the red jersey after crossing the line in 47min 05sec.

Movistar rider Nairo Quintana of Colombia, the last to tackle the course owing to his status as the overall leader, came home over three minutes slower in 50:11.

Quintana's fourth-place finish saw him relinquish his place at the top of the general classification standings and he is now three minutes off the lead.

Roglič has a 1:52 advantage over nearest challenger Alejandro Valverde of Movistar, with Miguel Angel Lopez of Astana occupying third.

"Every time trial you try to do as fast as possible, and it was the same mission today," the Slovenian said.

"I'm happy with the performance for sure. 

"I just tried to go all the time as fast as possible and yeah, it was enough at the end."

The race continues tomorrow with the 11th stage, a hilly 180km route from Saint Palais to Urdax.
