Bernal followed up her semi-final win over the United States' Dana Mathewson on Tuesday (August 27) by triumphing 6-2, 6-2 at Club Lawn Tennis.

Mathewson defeated Emmy Kaiser 6-3, 7-5 in an all-American bronze-medal match.

In men's doubles, Argentina's Gustavo Fernández and Agustín Ledesma overcame Americans Christopher Herman and Casey Ratzlaff 6-2, 6-0.

The bronze-medal match saw Chile's Alexander Cataldo and Diego Pérez defeat Brazil's Gustavo Carneiro and Daniel Rodrigues 6-3, 6-3.

Gold medals were also won in powerlifting.

Brazil secured three of the five on offer, thanks to victories for Joao De Franca Junior in the men's up to 49 kilograms category, Maria Luzineide Santos in the women's up to 50kg, and Bruno Pinheiro Carra in the men's up to 54kg.

All three prevailed with Parapan American records, with De Franca Junior lifting 141kg, Luzineide Santos managing 88kg, and Pinheiro Carra posting 163kg.

The two other gold medallists were Cuba's Leidy Rodríguez, in the women's combined 41kg and 45kg AH event, and Mexico's Amalia Pérez Vásquez, in the women's up to 55kg. 

Both achieved Parapan American records, with 103.23kg and 120kg, respectively.

In swimming, 12-year-old Colombian Sara Vargas Blanco was among the stand-out performers. 

The youngest athlete at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games added the women's 100 metres backstroke S6 title to her women's 50m butterfly S6 crown.

Vargas Blanco came out on top in a Parapan American record time of 1 min 33.03sec, with Mexico's Vianney Trejo Delgadillo second in 1:35.85 and Canada's Myriam Soliman third in 1:44.76.

"The truth is I don’t think about the age, only about how much I’ve practised to be here," Vargas Blanco, also a silver medallist in the women's 400m freestyle S6, said.

"It’s never too early or too late to dream big.

"I didn’t really expect to win this event because it was one of my worst strokes and I was second during almost the whole race."

Colombia took a further two gold medals on day five of swimming action, including a third victory for Paralympic champion Carlos Serrano Zárate, this time in the men’s 50m butterfly S7 in a Parapan American record time of 30.05.

Laura Gonzalez Rodriguez won the women’s 200m individual medley SM8 in 3:04.32.

Argentina also had plenty to celebrate. 

Matias De Andrade claimed the gold medal in the men’s 100m backstroke SB6 in 1:15.50, Daniela Gimenez in the women’s 200m individual medley SM9 in 2:41.54, and Nadia Soledad Baez in the women’s 50m freestyle S11 in 34.51.

Brazilian swimmers had their best day so far in Lima, with 10 gold medals.

Daniel Dias increased his Parapan American Games medal tally to 32 after his win in the men’s 50m butterfly S5 in 36.31.

The Rocha Matera family was responsible for two of the Brazilian titles.

Douglas won the men's 400m freestyle S13 in 4:29.58, before his brother Thomaz won the men’s 50m freestyle S12 in a Parapan American record time of 25.85.
