Ireland's Daniel Coyle went double clear to claim glory at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Jumping World Cup in Vancouver.

The 25-year-old was on board Farrel in the Canadian city and triumphed after a five-rider jump-off at Thunderbird Show Park.

Only two riders went clear for the second time with Coyle going quickest when it mattered, clocking 37.32sec.

Kelli Cruciotti of the United States was the other double clear rider but her jump-off time was 42.26 as she settled for second place.

Dutchman Harrie Smolders was third, ending the jump-off in 37.41 with Hocus Pocus de Muze but collecting four penalties.

"I think, give him another year's time, and he will be a real, real top horse," said Coyle.

"Not that he isn't right now, but he's still a little green.

"This was a real track today, and he proved himself to be a horse for the future."

Americans Beezie Madden and Richard Spooner also went clear first time but missed the podium in the jump-off, ending fourth and fifth.

The World Cup was the opening North American League event of the season as riders bid to qualify for the FEI World Cup Finals.

Coyle now tops the East Coast Sub League standings on 20 points while Cruciotti has gone top in the West Coast with 17.

"In the jump-off, usually he jumps better, which is strange, but when you start galloping, he starts to look a little quicker and jump a little higher," Coyle added.

"I know that from the last few years that I've had him.

"That third jump did come down a lot, and I really rode him at it, and he jumped it probably as good as he could that second time.

"When you know them a little more, it's a lot easier, especially when they're younger jumping this level."

The next North American Jumping World Cup will take place in North Salem in New York on September 15.
