Medals for the Mediterranean Beach Games have been unveiled prior to the Games beginning tomorrow at Patras in Greece.

Organisers say the medals feature the official symbol and name of the Mediterranean Beach Games, and depictions of the Archaeological Museum of Patras and Rio-Antirrio Bridge.

The bridge is the one of the world's longest cable-stayed bridges.

Located near Patras, the bridge links the town of Rio to Antirrio on mainland Greece.

The medals were revealed ahead of tomorrow's Opening Ceremony at the Artemis venue, located next to the town's aquatic centre.

Organisers say the main themes of the Ceremony will be sand and water.

Over 35 singers, musicians, dancers and acrobats are expected to perform, as well as numerous volunteers.

Nikos Papadimatos, President of the Patras 2019 organising committee, expressed hope that the Games would run smoothly.

"We are one day away from the start of the Games," he said.

"It is up to us to prove that we have responded to the needs imposed by the organisation of the second Mediterranean Beach Games and to the difficulties we were asked to face."

The Games will run from August 25 to 31, with 11 sports featuring on the programme.

Aquathlon, canoe ocean racing, finswimming, open-water swimming, rowing beach sprint and water skiing events will take place.

The beach versions of handball, football, volleyball, tennis and wrestling will also feature.

Organisers say 1,020 athletes will compete, representing 26 countries from Africa, Asia and Europe.
