Top seed Tomokazu Harimoto defeated Zihao Zhao to win the men's International Table Tennis Federation Bulgaria Open in Panagyurishte.

Harimoto from Japan had to be at his best against his world number 111 Chinese rival but eventually ground him down to win 11-6, 12-14, 11-5, 13-11, 13-15, 11-4 at Arena Asarel.

Zhao knocked out second seed Dimitrij Ovtcharov from Germany in the quarter-finals yesterday and he cruised past Nigeria's Quadri Aruna in the last four.

The Chinese kept his head against his higher-ranked opponent to record a 11-6, 12-14, 11-2, 11-8, 12-10 victory.

Harimoto enjoyed an 11-8, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4 last four win against Portugal's Marcos Freitas to reach the final.

Chen Xingtong won the all-Chinese women's final 11-4, 7-11,12-10, 11-6, 11-4 against He Zhoujia.

Fifth seed Xingtong reached the final by edging out Japanese second seed Mima Ito in a thriller.

A topsy-turvy clash saw Xingtong trail 3-2 but she kept her nerve to set up a final showdown with He by clinching the final two sets for a 6-11, 11-4, 11-7, 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7 victory.

The 11th seed Zhoujia defeated compatriot Wu Yang 11-9, 11-8, 11-8, 13-15, 3-11, 11-8 in the last four.
