Slovenia’s Luka Mezgec sprinted to victory on stage five as action resumed today at the Tour de Pologne after yesterday’s emotional hiatus to mark the death of Belgian cyclist Bjorg Lambrecht.

The Mitchelton-Scott rider, the winner of stage two on Sunday (August 4), made his move in the closing 100 metres of the 154 kilometres route from Kopalnia soli "Wieliczka" to Bielsko Biała in Poland.

He pulled well clear of his rivals, triumphing in a winning time of 3 hours 49min 55sec.

Spain’s Eduard Prades Reverte of Movistar had to settle for second place, while Great Britain’s Ben Swift of Team Ineos came third.

Germany’s Pascal Ackermann of Bora-Hansgrohe held on over a challenging day for the sprinters to maintain his lead in the general classification.

His overall time stands at 18:06:30.

Mezgec is four seconds behind in second place, and Swift a further 12 seconds back in third.

Lambrecht died in hospital following a crash around 60 miles from the end of the 150.5km-long stage three from Stadion Śląski in Chorzów to Zabrze on Monday (August 5).

The 22-year-old was competing in his second season at International Cycling Union WorldTour level.

"Today was a hard and brave day of pure racing," Tour de Pologne tweeted.

"They challenged on the climbs and attacked in breakaways.

"Not a day for sprinters, but many stayed in the bunch to battle it out for the finish line.

"We have still been riding #ForBjorg and will be doing so for long."

The race is due to continue tomorrow with a 160km route from Zakopane to Kościelisko.
