Russia had four finalists in the last five finals of the United World Wrestling Cadet World Championships in Sofia - and three of them earned gold medals. 

Iran’s 2019 Asian champion Soheyl Yousefi Sangani of Iran inflicted the only defeat of the night on Russia as he beat Zagid Karimov in the 92 kilograms final at Armeets Arena.

Lyova Gevorgyan of Armenia and Bekzat Tazhi of Kazakhstan won the bronze medals.

Russia’s two-time under-15 European champion Arip Abdulaev of Russia defeated Iran’s Asian silver medallist Erfan Mohammad Elahi in the 60kg final.

Viktor Tashohlo of Ukraine and Yoshinosuke Aoyagi of Japan earned bronze medals. 

Russia’s 2017 and 2018 Under-15 European gold medallist Mukhamed Khaniev proved too strong in the 51kg final for Kazakhstan’s Zhakhongir Akhmajanov.

Bronze medals were claimed by Ato Maruyama of Japan and Ukraine’s Mykyta Abramov.

Russia’s third gold medal came in the 71kg final, where Soslan Tigiev of Russia defeated Romania’a Krisztian Biro.

Bronze medals went to Alexander Facundo of the United States and Iran’s Abolfazi Valipourkhatir.

In the only final not involving a Russian athlete, Asian champion Ali Mehran Arab Firouzjai of Iran was beaten to the 45kg title by the 2018 Under-15 freestyle and Greco-Roman Pan American champion Marc-Anthony McGowan of the US. 

Bronze medals went to Tolga Ozbek of Turkey and Murad Hagvrdiyev of Azerbaijan.

The Cadet World Championship is a yearly event where the best Greco-Roman, freestyle and women wrestlers in the world aged 16 and 17-years-old compete.
