The United States have regained the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Under-19 Women's World Cup after a thrilling overtime victory over Australia.

It is the eighth time the US have won the FIBA title, having lost it two years ago following a surprise final defeat to Russia.

They had to work hard to avoid an upset in Bangkok Thai-Japan Youth Arena too, eventually overcoming Australia 74-70 for their seventh title in the past eight editions of the tournament.

Paige Bueckers was the standout player for the US, with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The US completed the tournament with seven wins from as many games, although they were pushed hardest by Australians.

Australia led 40-39 at halftime and the score was locked at 66-66 at the end of the four quarters, before the US edged ahead in overtime.

Izzy Anstey starred for Australia with 16 points and 12 rebounds in their first final since 1997, when they were also beaten by the US.

Earlier, Spain earned their first podium finish in the competition since losing the 2011 final as they beat Belgium 58-52 in the bronze medal match.
