Akane Yamaguchi is set to be confirmed as the world number one after she clinched the women's singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Japan Open in Tokyo, while Kento Momota defended his men's crown.

Yamaguchi secured her second consecutive BWF World Tour triumph following her success at the Indonesia Open last week with a 21-13, 21-15 win over Japanese compatriot Nozomi Okuhara in the final of the tournament, doubling as a test event for Tokyo 2020.

The 22-year-old, bronze medallist at last year's World Championships, will soon be confirmed as the world number one following her victory at Musashino Forest Sports Plaza.

"I was worried I wouldn't be able to win the long rallies, but I was patient, and whenever there was a chance to make a decisive shot, I was able to make the sharp shots," Yamaguchi said.

World champion and top seed Momota made sure of a Japanese sweep of the singles titles at the event as he beat Indonesian Jonatan Christie in the men's final at the BWF World Tour Super 750 event.

The 2018 Japan Open winner was too strong for his rival as he capped his return to form with a 21-16, 21-13 victory.

"Everyone has studied my game, and sometimes even when I play well, things don't work out," Momota said after securing his fifth title of the year.

"That's the difficulty I faced this year.

"I wasn't in form, and that made me nervous, coming into the Japan Open.

"Winning under these conditions is something different from last year.

"After my loss in Indonesia, I came with the mindset to win in Japan.

"I haven't done well at other tournaments, but I was determined not to lose here at my home event."

Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong of South Korea denied Japan another gold medal as they ousted top seeds Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara 21-12, 21-12 in the women's doubles final.

Top seeds Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo of Indonesia won the men's doubles crown by defeating compatriots Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Satiawan 21-18, 23-21.

The mixed doubles title was clinched by China's Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping, who beat Indonesia's Praveen Jordan and Melati Oktavianti 21-17, 21-16.

The competition was part of the "Ready Steady Tokyo" test event series for next year's Olympics in the Japanese capital.
