Home favourite Diego Elías gained revenge for his final loss four years ago by beating Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rodriquez in the men’s singles squash event at Lima 2019 today.

A rematch of the Toronto 2015 final had been expected prior to the tournament with the duo considered the top two seeds.

Elías lived up to expectations by beating Mexico’s Cesar Salazar in the semi-finals in the morning session, while Angel Rodriquez overcame Argentina’s Roberto Pezzota.

The gold medal match would prove a reversal of the final four years ago, with Elías winning the opening game at the CAR Voleibol en la Videna venue before his Colombian rival hit back.

Elías, competing in front of a local crowd, regained the momentum to seal a four game 11-6, 7-11, 12-10, 11-8 victory to top the podium.

Salazar and Pezzota earned the bronze medals following their semi-final defeats.

The women’s event saw United States’ Amanda Sobhy overcome her compatriot Olivia Blatchford in a repeat of the Toronto 2015 final.

Blatchford won the opening game of the contest, but defending champion Sobhy stormed back to secure a 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 win.

Canada’s Hollie Naughton and Samantha Cornett completed the podium.

Brazil’s Bruna Wurts was crowned winner of the women's artistic roller-skating event after being awarded a score of 103.17.

The silver medal was claimed by Argentina’s Giselle Soler, who finished as runner-up on 92.15.

Ecuador’s Eduarda Fuentes completed the podium on 70.68.

Juan Sanchez avoided the same fate as compatriot Soler after scoring 152.63 in the men's artistic roller-skating event.

He bettered John Burchfield of the United States with 133.17, while Brazil's Gustavo Casado finished third on 128.09.

Argentina’s Lucas Guzman was the victor in the men’s 58kg taekwondo competition, narrowly beating Mexico’s Brandon Plaza 19-17 in the final.

The women’s 49kg final went to Mexico's Daniela Souza, who overcame Brazil’s Talisca Jeziekski 4-2 in a cagey contest to take the gold.

Bronze medals were claimed by Colombia’s Andrea Ramirez and United States’ Monique Rodriquez.

Colombia were the dominant force in weightlifting four years ago in Toronto, winning eight gold medals from a possible 15.

Francisco Mosquera ensured they begun Lima 2019 in a similar fashion, winning the men’s 61kg event.

The Colombian lifted 132kg in the snatch, before producing a successful attempt at 170kg in the clean and jerk.

He took the overall title on 302kg, adding to a silver from Toronto 2015 in the 62kg event.

His team-mate Jhon Serna won silver by ending on 297kg, 11kg clear of bronze medallist Antonio Vazquez of Mexico.

Beatriz Piron lifted 87kg in the snatch and 106kg in the women's clean and jerk.

Her efforts saw her have a five kilogram advantage over Colombia’s Ana Segura in the competition, forcing her rival to attempt a clean and jerk of 111kg if she was to take the title.

Segura proved unable to do so, leaving her to settle for second place on 188kg in total, with Piron celebrating the victory.

Segura split the two Dominican Republic athletes on the podium, with Santa Cotes Villa winning bronze on 177kg.

Competition continues tomorrow.
