More than 100 National Members of the IFMA have agreed that the world governing body will now be known as the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, meaning that the acronym will remain the same.

The agreement, announced as the IFMA World Championships reaches its climax, also strengthens the relationship between the IFMA and the World Muaythai Council (WMC), founded by the Royal Thai Government in 1995 with the aim of promoting Thailand's national sport internationally.

The IFMA was granted recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in December 2016.

Thailand's IOC member Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul was among those present for today's announcement.

Other guests included Gongsak Yomandee, Governor of the Sport Authority of Thailand, and Chungwon Choue, the President of World Taekwondo. 

The new IFMA logo incorporates, what the governing body claim, is an important step forward for gender equality. 

The logo previously only displayed a male athlete but has now been adapted to include a female fighter.

Stephan Fox, the general secretary of the IFMA, told delegates that there were 32 National Federations present when they and the WMC held their first meeting 24 years ago but now there are 132 countries who are members. 

"As a ThaiI am proud of IFMA’s recognition and continued growth in the world of sports also working towards providing a strong foundation and opportunity for the athletes to grow," IFMA President Sakchye Tapsuan said.
