Romania’s Florin Bologa successfully defended his title as the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Judo European Championships got under way in Genoa today.

He beat Turkey’s Recep Ciftci in the men’s under-60 kilograms class, earning qualification points for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Bronze medals went to Georgians Zurab Zurabiani and Nukri Migrijanashvili.

Ukraine’s Davyd Khorava won gold in the men’s under-66kg category, defeating Azerbaijan’s Bayram Mustafayeva in the final.

Bronze medals were claimed by Georgia duo Giorgi Kaldani and Giorgi Gamjashvli.

Germany’s Nikolai Kornhass was champion in the under-73kg category thanks to victory over Vasilii Kutuev of Russia, with bronzes going to Spain’s Alvaro Gavrilan Lorenzo and Ramil Gasimov of Azerbaijan.

In the women’s competition, France’s Sandrine Aurieres Martinet won the under-48kg gold with victory over Russia’s Anastasiia Chudina, bronze medals going to Yuliya Halinska of Ukraine and Ecem Tasin of Turkey.

Ukraine’s Inna Cherniak was victor in the under-52kg class, beating Russia’s Alesia Stepaniuk in the final, with Ramona Brussig of Germany and Sabina Abdullayeva of Azerbaijan taking bronzes.

Zeynep Celik Aydin of Turkey took under-57kg gold with a defeat of Azerbaijan’s Sevda Valiyeva.

Bronzes went to Russia’s Natalia Ovchinnikova and Jelana Breskovic of Croatia.

Tomorrow, action will take place in the women’s under-63kg, under-70kg and over-70kg classes, and the men’s under-81kg, under-90kg, under-100kg and over-100kg categories.

Day three, on Sunday, will feature the mixed team event.
