International Ski Federation (FIS) President Gian-Franco Kasper has hailed the impact of the organisation's SnowKidz scheme after the official report for the last 12 months was released.

The initiative aims to bring youngsters to the snow at events around the world in a bid to create the next generation of athletes and fans.

Thirty-five countries held events over the last year, the report says, with 810 taking place in all.

This is the first time the 800-mark has been broken with nine events taking place in "major cities" and 10 "nationwide actions" also being held.

Ninety-six per cent of people surveyed said they would attend the same event the following year while 81 per cent said that "spending time with friends and family" was their reason for going.

There is a 97 per cent retention rate of events and 494 event organisers in all, with the largest gathering attracting 500,000 people.

SnowKidz's social media channels have reportedly seen an average growth of 27.6 per cent with more than 142,000 visitors to the official website.

"For the past two seasons SnowKidz has exceeded 750 events in a 12-month period," said Kasper.

"Whilst this momentum was excellent we remained humble and did not predict the programme would exceed 800.

"However, this doubt was unfounded.

"The 2018-2019 season of SnowKidz saw 810 events and actions take place.

"The number represents a key point in the timeline of snow sports as never has the global snow sports community seen such a large action to sure up the future of snow sports globally.

"To summarise SnowKids, like its young participants, is healthy.

"The programme is active, achieving its goals and reporting back good results when tested.

"FIS is looking forward to caring for the health of this programme and ensuring it has a long and fruitful life."

Since launching in 2009 there have been 3,799 SnowKidz events and more than 4.9 million participants.

The project is backed by six partners – Atomic Skis, Burton Riglet Snowboarding, MND Group, Skadi App, the European Federation for the Sport Goods Industry and Right to Play.
