Home player Georgii Karpov beat England’s Farouk Mohammed Hassan in straight games today to set up a round-two clash with second-seeded Indonesian Shesar Hiren Rhustavito at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Russian Open in Vladivostok.

Karpov triumphed 21-10, 21-6 on the opening day of the BWF Tour Super 100 event at Sport Hall Olympik.

He will face Rhustavito tomorrow when all eight seeded players in the men’s singles draw enter the competition.

Top seed Subhankar Dey of India will meet England’s Hin Shun Wong, while third seed Loh Kean Yew of Singapore goes up against Japan’s Ryotaro Maruo.

Wong and Maruo both had walkover wins today at the expense of Finnish opponents, Kalle Koljonen and Iikka Heino, respectively.

Standing between fourth-seeded Indonesian Ihsan Maulana Mustofa and a place in round three is Uzbekistan’s Amrullo Bakhshullaev, who defeated compatriot Artyom Savatyugin 21-12, 21-16 today.

Action is due to run through to Sunday (July 21).

The women’s singles event is scheduled to begin tomorrow.
