Jersey claimed three of the seven athletics gold medals up for grabs today at the Island Games in Gibraltar.

There were wins for Peter Irving in the men’s 110 metres hurdles, Elliott Dorey in the men’s 5,000m and Ross Jeffs in the men’s long jump at Lathbury Sports Complex.

Irving triumphed in a time of 16.08sec, finishing 0.26 seconds ahead of silver medallist Toby Glass of Guernsey.

Dorey prevailed in 15min 24.84sec, with Gibraltar’s Harvey Dixon second in 15:25.56 and the Isle of Wight’s Daniel Eckersley third in 15:29.61, while Jeffs came out on top with a leap of 7.23 metres.

Cayman Islands’ Carl Morgan and Louis Gordon completed the men’s long jump podium, behind Jeffs, with marks of 7.15m and 6.93m respectively.

Other athletes tasting victory today in athletics included Saaremaa's Teele Treiel in the women's high jump and compatriot Herkki Leemet in the men's discus.

There was also success for Guernsey's Rhiannon Dowinton in the women's 100m hurdles and fellow countrywoman Sarah Mercier in the women's 5,000m.

Another sport in which medals were won today was swimming, with Faroe Islands particularly impressive in taking four golds.

Vár Erlingsdóttir Eidesgaard secured the women's 50m and 400m freestyle titles in 26.11 and 4:17.18 respectively, while there were also podium-topping performances from Signhild Joensen in the women's 200m backstroke in 2:11.24 and Óli Mortensen in the men's 800m freestyle in 8:09.94.

Jersey top the current medal standings with 22 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze, while Faroe Islands are second with 19 gold, five silver and 20 bronze.
