Fifteen-year-old Spaniard Vera Baron claimed a stunning victory in the women's event as the International Cycling Union Trials World Cup season opened in Salzburg.

The teenager collected 270 points out of a possible 300 from the six-rider final to clinch the gold medal in the Austrian city.

It meant Germany's all-conquering Nina Reichenbach had to settle for second on 240 points as she chases a fourth overall World Cup title in a row.

Reichenbach, the world number one, triumphed on every leg of the World Cup circuit last season and has also won three consecutive World Championship titles.

World number two Manon Basseville of France, who was second overall behind Reichenbach last season, finished third today after collecting 210 points.

In the men's 26 inch competition Britain's three-time and reigning world champion Jack Carthy took top honours with 280 points.

Carthy won two of the four World Cup competitions last season but did not win the overall title as he missed the final stop in Berlin, allowing current world number one Nicolas Vallée of France to clinch victory.

Vallée was beaten today as he scored 270 points in second place with his compatriot Vincent Hermance tallying 240 for bronze from the six-rider final.

In the men's 20 inch event Spain's 18-year-old Alejandro Montalvo made the perfect start to the defence of his overall World Cup crown with victory.

He scored 270 points along with team-mate Bora Conejos but won gold on count-back after topping the semi-final standings.

Germany's Dominik Oswald came third with 240 points as Austria's world champion Thomas Pechhacker missed out on a home medal and finished fourth.

Pechhacker also scored 240 but achieved fewer maximum scores of 60 than Oswald.

This is the first Trials World Cup season with new rules that see points scored at every gate in five sections.

Each section comprises six gates, with a maximum of 10 points collected for every gate crossed "clean".

Therefore the best score possible per section is 60 points and the rider with the highest score is declared the winner.

The three-leg Trials World Cup season will continue in Val di Sole in Italy between August 23 and 25.
