Olympic champions combine to win mixed skeet gold for Italy at ISSF World Shotgun Championship

Olympic gold medallists Gabriele Rossetti and Diana Bacosi clinched the mixed skeet team title at the International Shooting Sport Federation Shotgun World Championship on home soil in Italy.

Rossetti and Bacosi, the reigning individual men's and women's Olympic champions, respectively, topped the podium with 38 targets in Lonato.

The formidable Italian duo overcame the challenge posed by Christian Elliott and three-times Olympic gold medallist Kimberly Rhode in the final.

Rossetti and Bacosi's total was two more than the 36 amassed by the American pair as they were forced to settle for silver.

The bronze medal was claimed by Jin Di and Wei Meng of China, who defeated Britain's Jeremy Bird and Emily Hibbs by 36 targets to 32.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
