Canada and Jamaica both recorded three victories from three in the men's tournament at the Rugby Americas North Sevens as they bid to earn a Tokyo 2020 Olympic spot.

The Canadians scored 151 points and conceded just five across their Pool A matches in the Cayman Islands as they lived up to their favourites' tag.

They began the event at the Truman Bodden National Sports Complex in George Town with a 47-0 win over Barbados and backed that up by beating Mexico 49-5 and Bermuda 55-0.

Canada failed to reach Tokyo 2020 via the 2018-2019 World Rugby Sevens Series and fired English coach Damian McGrath in May, replacing him with New Zealand-born Henry Paul.

He will no doubt be pleased by his side's start with only the tournament winners earning an Olympic place.

All eight teams in the competition qualify for the quarter-finals with the group phase merely determining who plays who.

Mexico finished second in Pool A, beating Bermuda 31-0 and Barbados 24-12.

Bermuda edged Barbados 17-15 as the two sides finished third and fourth respectively.

In Pool B, Jamaica racked up 111 points and conceded only 12.

They beat hosts Cayman Islands 47-0, Trinidad and Tobago 22-5 and Guyana 42-7.

Trinidad and Tobago defeated Guyana 19-7 and the Cayman Islands 19-10 to end in second spot.

There was some home cheer as the hosts saw off Guyana 14-12 to avoid finishing last.

The tournament will be played to a conclusion tomorrow with Canada meeting Guyana in the quarter-finals and Jamaica playing Barbados.

Trinidad and Tobago will lock horns with Bermuda and Mexico will play Cayman Islands.

United States are not taking part having already qualified for Tokyo 2020 through the World Rugby Sevens Series.

In the women's event, a six team round-robin is taking place with the winners and runners-up earning a spot at the Olympic repechage tournament to be held in June next year.

After three matches, Jamaica top the pile after beating Bermuda 55-0, The Bahamas 36-5 and Saint Lucia 20-5.

Mexico are their nearest challengers, defeating Saint Lucia 17-5 and Bermuda 37-0 before a 15-15 draw with Trinidad and Tobago.

The remaining women's matches will also be played tomorrow, with the top two at the end of the round-robin contesting a final.

An automatic Tokyo 2020 place is not on the line as the US and Canada have already qualified through the World Rugby Sevens Series.
