The Swiss 22nd seed succumbed to the United States’ towering youngster Reilly Opelka in the second round of the men’s singles, losing 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 8-6.

Opelka, who delivered a 142 miles per hour serve which was the fastest of the Championships so far, will take on Canada’s 15th seed Milos Raonic next.

Raonic secured his safe passage with a 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 win over the Netherlands’ Robin Haase.

Russian duo Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev, seeded 10th and 11th respectively, also got through.

Khachanov was too good for Queen’s winner Feliciano Lopez of Spain, prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, while Medvedev overpowered Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, beaten by Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, won through 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 against Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia.

Djokovic himself was not troubled, the 15-times Grand Slam champion from Serbia sweeping aside American Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, 15-year-old Coco Gauff cemented her status as the new darling of Wimbledon with a terrific win over Magdalena Rybarikova.

American qualifier Gauff, previously the conqueror of Venus Williams, was enormously impressive in securing a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Slovakian on Court One.

In doing so, she became the youngest player to reach the last 32 since Jennifer Capriati – who went on to make the semi-finals – in 1991.

Elsewhere, Britain’s Heather Watson was beaten 7-5, 6-1 by Estonia’s 20th seed Anett Kontaveit, who will take on Czech player Karolina Muchova next after she saw off American Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-4.

Seventh seed Simona Halep overcame a wobble to beat Romanian compatriot Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Next up for her is Belarus’s two-times Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, who cruised past Ajla Tomljanović 6-2, 6-0.

Third-seeded Czech Karolína Plíšková is through having thrashed Puerto Rico player Monica Puig 6-0, 6-4.

Shocks arrived in the form of the exits of Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova and the US’s Madison Keys.

Sevastova fell to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 loss to American Danielle Collins while Keys was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Slovenia’s Polona Hercog, the world number 60.
