Belgium and Russia progressed to the quarter-finals as action continued at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s EuroBasket in Belgrade today.

Belgium booked their spot in the last eight with a hard-fought 72-67 win over Slovenia, while Russia overcame Italy 63-54 at Štark Arena.

The Belgian side will go on to face 2017 runners-up France and Russia will take on holders Spain for a place in the semi-finals.

Belgium trailed 20-10 after the first quarter but had a narrow 34-32 lead at the halfway stage.

Slovenia and Belgium both scored 19 points in the third stanza to set up an intriguing final period, which Belgium won 19-16 to secure their path through to the quarter-finals.

Julie Allemand led the way for the Belgian team with 25 points, the highest recorded in the match, while three players - Teja Oblak, Nika Baric and Shante Evans - racked up 15 points for Slovenia.

Russia were also behind early on in their encounter with Italy, who moved 33-29 ahead at the interval.

But the Russians hit back with a clinical second half to seal a win which keeps their hopes of sealing the EuroBasket title alive.

Cecilia Zandalasini's game-high individual total of 24 points was in vain as Italy fell to defeat, while Maria Vadeeva top-scored for Russia with 19.

The tournament resumes on Thursday (July 4) following a rest day tomorrow.
