Flatland competition will form part of this year’s Urban Cycling World Championships in Chengdu, the International Cycling Union (UCI) have announced.

The governing body confirmed the inaugural UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Championships would be on the programme for the third edition of the event in the Chinese city and scheduled to take place between November 6 and 10.

Flatland has featured alongside the park event on the UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup programme since 2018.

It involves performing tricks on a flat piece of ground, often while balancing on a single wheel.

Participants are judged on the difficulty and originality of their tricks as well as their style.

The addition will see the programme for the Urban Cycling World Championships include BMX Freestyle Flatland, BMX Freestyle Park and trials.

These three disciplines have been described as "urban and dynamic" by the UCI.

As part of the changes, mountain bike eliminator competitions have been removed from the Championships programme.

The UCI claim this is to ensure the Urban Cycling World Championships programme is coherent.

"The integration of BMX freestyle llatland into the programme of the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships marks the appearance of a new UCI World Championships for cycling," David Lappartient, President of the UCI, said.

"I am delighted to see this demonstration of our sport’s dynamism.

"In addition, the arrival of this discipline reinforces the identity of an event that was created to meet the expectations of a public that enjoys a show and to make our sport even more popular with the younger generation."

The format for this year’s edition of the Urban Cycling World Championships is currently under consideration, with the UCI promising an announcement will be made at a later stage.

The Urban Cycling World Championships were first held in 2017.

The first three editions were awarded to Chengdu.

It came after the UCI signed a "groundbreaking agreement" with Wanda Sports to develop both elite and grassroots sides of the sport across China.
