Venezuela enjoyed further success on the second day of the Pan American Sambo Championships in the Dominican Republic’s capital Santo Domingo.

The Venezuelan team had secured three gold medals on the opening day of the event at Handball Pavilion in the Park of the East.

Success continued on the second day as Geiker Ferrer clinched gold in the 74 kilogram men’s combat sambo event.

He saw off the challenge of Mexico’s Luis Banuelos in the final to take top step on the podium.

The men’s 68kg sambo competition saw Ferrer’s team-mate Jose Guanipa overcome home favourite Yancarlos Amador in the gold medal match.

The Dominican Republic endured highs and lows in the 82kg and 100kg competitions.

Carlos Garcia delivered success for the home team in the 82kg event by beating Ecuador’s Yoan Blanco in the final.

His compatriot Bladimir Frias was unable to match the feat in the 100kg competition, as he suffered defeat to Canda’s Kyrylo Sozin.

There was gold for the Dominican Republic’s Evelin Cuevas in the women’s 60kg event, following her triumph against Costa Rica’s Estephany Breiceno.

Costa Rica’s Nicole Castro and Cuba’s Brenda Molina won the women’s 68kg and 80kg events respectively.
