West Indies suffered elimination at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s World Cup in England after a comprehensive defeat to India, who remain unbeaten at the tournament.

West Indies had slim hopes of progressing to the semi-finals prior to the match at Old Trafford, needing three straight wins to advance.

Unbeaten India sought to increase the pressure on their opponents after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

KL Rahul made 48 before being bowled by Jason Holder, who also claimed the wicket of India’s captain Virat Kohli.

Kohli had already caused damage by scoring 72 runs off 82 balls, before being caught off Holder’s bowling.

An unbeaten 56 from MS Dhoni helped India reach 268-7.

West Indies' hopes of achieving the 269-run target suffered early body blows, the dismissals of Chris Gayle and Shai Hope leaving them at 16-2.

Sunil Ambris and Nicholas Pooran briefly steadied the innings as the duo reached scores of 31 and 38, respectively.

The duo would ultimately top score for the West Indies, who never threatened to reach their target as they surrendered wickets regularly.

They were eventually bowled out for 143, giving India victory by a 125-run margin.

Mohammed Shami picked up four wickets for India, who rose to second in the standings.

India have won all five of their matches to date, their other fixture ending in a no result after being rained off.

They have a game in hand over Australia, who top the standings with six wins and one defeat from seven matches.

West Indies are out of contention for the semi-finals after five defeats in seven matches.
