The South Korean Embassy in Papua New Guinea has again backed the 7th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship in the Pacific nation.

Thanks to funding and supplies, the Ambassador's Cup was held for the seventh time at the Caritas Secondary Technical School in Port Moresby, according to Loop PNG.

It is hoped the event will improve the relationship between the two countries while promoting Korean culture and improving the standard of taekwondo in Papua New Guinea.

More than 150 athletes from around the world were invited to compete at the event to put the local players through their paces.

It comes after national governing body Taekwondo PNG invited World Taekwondo's Peace Corps to the country in January.

Three instructors and a translator travelled and trained 50 players with the visit continuing a relationship that has run since 2010.

In March, four Papua New Guinea athletes trained in South Korea and in 2016 the K-Tigers performance team went in the other direction with their live show.

Aunt and nephew Samantha and Maxemillion Kassman both appeared for Papua New Guinea in the Olympic taekwondo tournament at Rio 2016.
