A total of five world champions are set to be in action when the Karate 1-Series A circuit resumes in Montreal this weekend.

The event at Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard begins tomorrow and concludes on Sunday (June 23).

It is the third stop on this year's Karate 1-Series A series and follows stops in Salzburg and Istanbul.

Around 800 competitors from 79 countries have entered the event, including the five world champions.

Jovana Prekovic of Serbia will compete in the women's under-61 kilograms kumite division, while Greece's Eleni Chatzilidou will be among the favourites at under-68kg.

Angelo Crescenzo of Italy in the men's kumite under-60kg, Iran's Bahman Asgari Ghoncheh at under-75kg and Germany's Jonathan Horne in the over-84kg are the other world champions set to participate in the Canadian city.

Other notable karatekas due to compete are Marina Rakovic of Montenegro, Japan's Kakeru Nishiyama and Iran's Mahdi Mahani Ghararizadeh, all of whom took gold at the last Karate 1-Series A in Istanbul.

The series allows athletes to secure points towards qualification for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo, where karate will make its debut on the programme.
