Hannes Wolf suffered a horrifying injury while playing for Austria in their 2-0 Group B victory over Serbia at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

The forward had bundled his team ahead eight minutes before the break at Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste, Italy after Sascha Horvath’s shot had rebounded kindly off the post.

But Wolf saw his night turn sour when he was challenged by Vukašin Jovanović with a quarter of an hour left.

The 20-year-old’s ankle turned the wrong way as he went to ground and he looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Although the incident had appeared unfortunate, Jovanović was shown a red card.

From the resultant free-kick, Horvath made sure of Austria's first victory in European Under-21 Championship history, his strike zipping through a crowded box and into the net.

In tonight’s other game, defending champions Germany overcame Denmark 3-1 at Dacia Arena in Udine.

A brace from Marco Richter and an effort from Luca Waldschmidt put the Germans in control before Robert Skov grabbed a 73rd-minute consolation from the penalty spot.
