Canada and the United States qualified for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo as New Zealand continued their pursuit of a fifth overall title by reaching the quarter-finals of the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series event in Biarritz.

The Canadian and American teams booked their place at Tokyo 2020 by progressing to the last eight at Parc des Sports Aguiléra.

The US did so in style as they claimed victory in their three Pool C matches.

They eased past China 36-5 and went on to edge out Fiji 14-12 in a low-scoring contest before a 19-7 win against France sent them through to the quarter-finals, where they will meet Russia.

New Zealand, who had already guaranteed a spot at the Olympics in the Japanese capital, also secured a quarter-final spot in the French town with a 100 per cent group stage record.

Last year's runners-up began with a crushing 44-7 win over invitational side Scotland in Pool A before they defeated Russia 31-0.

A 27-14 victory against England earned New Zealand top spot in the group and set up a meeting with China in the quarter-finals.

Australia also won all three of their matches today as the defending overall champions topped Pool B.

They opened their campaign with a 27-5 triumph against Ireland before beating Spain 31-14 and Canada 27-14.

Australia will face Spain again in the last eight, while Canada take on France in the other quarter-final.

New Zealand, who have won four of the five events this season, lead the standings with 92 points, 12 more than the United States in second place.
